Started playing cornet at age 10 in a Newcastle brass band, at age 16 joined a local jazz band playing trumpet. Continued playing trumpet for many years in jazz bands then moved to the Club scene playing for dancers and backing artists.

Learnt to play tenor banjo playing with local bands.

Travelled to Adelaide to play with the Balled Eagle Jazz Band. Toured Switzerland, United Kingdom and New Zealand with the Spirit of New Orleans Jazz Band.

Now playing trumpet and banjo in Newcastle, Sydney and festivals around Australia. Occasionally leads his own band the John Wilson Dixieland Jazz Band.
